Understanding Prior Authorization in Medicare Advantage and Part D Plans

Medicare Advantage (Part C) and Medicare Part D prescription drug plans are privatized and both often require Prior Authorization as part of the process to receive certain medical services or prescriptions.

Prior Authorization is a process where your Medicare plan provider reviews and determines whether a prescribed treatment or medication is covered and medically necessary. While this system helps prevent fraud and unnecessary care, it can also lead to delays or denials in receiving treatment or medication.

If you’re considering enrolling in a Medicare Advantage or Part D plan, here are some important tips to keep in mind regarding Prior Authorization:

Check your prescriptions in advance.

Before enrolling, find out whether your current medications require Prior Authorization. Typically, medications in Tiers 4 and 5 are more likely to require it, although some Tier 3 medications may as well.

Compare plan formularies and drug tiers.

Not all plans classify medications the same way. A drug might be in a lower tier (with fewer restrictions) in one plan and in a higher tier (with Prior Authorization) in another. This can significantly affect both access and cost.

Act early if Prior Authorization is needed.

If you know a medication requires Prior Authorization, don’t wait until the last minute—getting a decision can take 2–3 days or longer.

Coordinate with your doctor.

Let your physician know which plan you’re enrolling in and discuss any medications that may require Prior Authorization. Make sure they have and submit the correct forms to your insurance provider.

Know your appeal rights.

If your request is denied, you have the right to appeal the decision through Medicare’s appeals process.

Medicare can be complex, and Prior Authorization is just one of many moving parts. Understanding processes like Prior Authorization can help you navigate your Medicare journey with greater confidence and ease.
