Good News for Medicare Beneficiaries with End-Stage Renal Disease

Are you one of the almost 500,000 Medicare beneficiaries affected by End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD), also known as kidney failure? An ESRD diagnosis triggers Medicare eligibility, regardless of a person’s age, however Original Medicare carries potentially high out-of-pocket costs (20% coinsurance for Part B services, including dialysis). Thanks to the 21st Century Cures Act, signed into law in 2016, individuals with ESRD can now consider a Medicare Advantage plan as an alternative to their current Medicare benefits starting in 2021.

By enrolling in a Medicare Advantage plan, a beneficiary will maintain their existing Medicare benefits and can add benefits for dental, vision, hearing, transportation and gym memberships. Though premiums may be higher with these plans, there are caps on out-of-pocket expenses, which will be ultimately less expensive for beneficiaries on kidney dialysis.

If you or someone you know is being treated for ESRD and is enrolled in Medicare, they can explore Medicare Advantage options during the 2021 Annual Enrollment Period starting on October 15 and ending on December 7th.
